Guyana achieved independence from the United Kingdom on 26 May 1966 and declared itself a "cooperative republic" on 23 February 1970. This day is intended to mark the "Birth of the Republic". Mashrami annual festival includes parade, music, games and cooking competitions. There are many colorful carnivals and parades held on this day.
