About : The word "Bandi" means "imprisoned", "Chhor" means "release" and "Divas" means "day" and together "Bandi Chhor Divas" means Prisoner Release Day. It is was a time when "right" prevailed over "wrong" so it was celebrated with great joy. The Mughals had held many hundreds of prisoners who were effectively political prisoners otherwise innocent leaders of their communities. They had been held without trial or any other legal process. They were jailed by a brute force which was held against their wishes. This day is celebrated with a fireworks display. The Golden Temple, as well as the whole complex, is festooned with thousands of shimmering lights, creating a unique jewel box effect.
